    Etter endt skolegang var han i forretning i Drammen, deretter på kontor hos det kjente store firma O. M. Hauge i Christiania i årene 1848-1854. Deretter dro han til London og var 2 år hos sin onkel, Johan Fredrik Blichfeldt, i firmaet Blichfeldt & Co. Deretter et år i Hamburg hvor han giftet seg. Gikk i kompaniskap med Ludvig Knoph under firma Knoph & Blichfeldt, manufakturforretning en gros. Som reisende hadde han sin halvbror Hans H. Blichfeldt. Denne forretning gikk overstyr i 1867 , og Fredrik Emil Blichfeldt startet da en agenturforretning under eget navn. Han drev i 1880 en betydelig eksportforretning i vilt, særlig ryper. Samtidig representerte han American Line for passasjerer til USA. Senere Cunard Steam Ship Co., Liverpool. Ved siden av sin forretning var han en dyktig og meget benyttet revisor. Han var også sterkt interessert i flere seilskipsrederier. I 1861 var han "Directeur" i Christiania Handelsforening (den senere Chr.a. Handelstands forening). og i 1859 - 61 formann i Handelsstandens Sangforening. 3.11.1870 ble han samme år innført i Logen i Chr.a.

    Han var 21 år da han flyttet til Drammen med sine foreldre. Hans virksomhet fremover kjenner man ikke ti!, men jeg finner at han i 1829 søkte og fikk borgerskap i Drammen for å drive som malermester. I 1840 stod han som kjøper av gården Øvre Kniv e i Skoger. Jeg antar at hans yngre bror Olaus, som da var kjøpmann i Drammen, allerede ved kjøpet hadde støttet økonomisk, for i flg. en skylddelingsforretning av 12.11.1844 nevnes Olaus Blichfeldt som eier, og Hans Blichfeldt opptrer på vegn e av sin bror. Men i 1847 var det igjen Hans Blichfeldt som var eier, idet han da utstedte et skadesløsbrev av 8.4. 1847 til Olaus Blichfeldt på 2000 Spd. Heldigvis ble dette tinglyst, for allerede i 1849 ble det holdt tvangsauksjon over eiendomme n, og Olaus Blichfeldt kjøpte eiendommen for å redde sine utlegg.

    Hans Blichfeldt må imidlertid ha hatt større anlegg som forretningsmann, for straks etter finner man ham som støperieier av Asdøl støperi i Sylling i Lier.

    Fredrik ble satt i lære hos lensmann Hansen. Han rykket snart opp som fullmektig, og i 1801 overtok han embedet etter sin prinsipal. Han satt som lensmann til 1823. I lensmannstid opplevde han den såkalte «barkebrødtiden». Landet var blokkert, de t ble dårlig både med penger og mat. Befolkningen var til dels avhengig av grevens forråd av korn osv. Det ble visstnok også lensmannens oppgave å fordele de tilgjengelige forråd. Jeg gjengir et brev som tyder på det:

    Etter at Fredrik Chr. O. M. Blichfeldt sluttet som lensmann, bodde han en kort tid i Holmestrand, men flyttet så til Drammen og bosatte seg der. Han kjøpte en liten eiendom på Tangen, matr. nr. 355 for 500 Spd. og søker og får borgerskap i Dramme n den 31.1.1825 og begynte en «høgerbutik», men døde 1 år senere, 29.5.1826, og ble begravet på Tangen kirkegård, visstnok der hvor kirken nå står.

    Etter mannens død satt Madam Maren Kristine igjen med 5 gutter, hvorav 3 var ukonfirmert. Hennes ærgjerrighet og dyktighet kom nå til nytte. Hun ga dem sikkert en god oppdragelse og utdannelse, men fikk også den glede å se sine sønner bli fremtredende samfunnsborgere. Madame Blichfeldt skal ha vært en vakker og staselig dame, men litt for storslått i flg. sønen Olaus Blichfeldt.
    Tross megen motgang var hun stolt og kledte og førte seg bedre enn de fleste.
    Hennes ordspråk var: "Alle ser min nøkne arm, men ingen ser min tomme tarm."
