    "Dr. Peder Krog f. 8.4.1654 i Aarhuus, hvor faderen Mag. Niels Krog, en Nordmand, var Skolens Rector. Moderen hed Cæsilia Pedersdatter Blichfeldt. Deponerede 1670, reiste 1673 udenlands og blev 1675 Magister i Wittenberg. Ved sin Hjemkomst 1678 bl ev han Vice-provst paa Communitetet, 1679 Rector i Kjøge, 1681 Provst over Samsø og Sognepræst til Bedser og Onsberg; i Dec 1688 Biskop i Trondhjem, hvortil han blev ordinert 17 Febr. 1689; s.A. Doctor Theologiæ; erholdt 1690 Justidsraads Rang. Dø de 24.5.1731 som jubellærer. Ved hans Omsorg bleve ikke mindre end 48 Kirker opførte fra nyt af i Stiftet. Da Trondhjems Latinskole i 1708 avbrændte, læste han selv i Lectors Sted i 8 Aar uden Løn for at det ledige Lectorats Indkomster imidlerti d kunde anvendes til Skolens Opbyggelse. Gift i Juli 1681 med Anna Dorothea Bremer, f. 26.5.1659, død 21.2.1746, Datter af en Borgermester Bremer i Kiel".

    Biskop Peder Krog i Trondheim (1688– 1731) var fra sin aller tidligste embetstid en dynamisk drivkraft bak et forsert kirkelig arbeid i bispedømmet, ikke minst lengst nord og blant samene. I motsetning til forgjengerne foretok han flere visitasreiser i Finnmark. Sjøl om vi ikke vet det, er det rimeligvis Krog som sto bak det kongelige påbud om å bygge de to første kirker inne i de største "finnfjordene" i Finnmark. Ved reskript i 1691 ble det befalt kirkebygging inne i Alta- og Varangerfjorden. I Alta ble reskriptet straks fulgt opp og kirke anlagt på Årøya, ferdigstilt i 1694. I Varanger, derimot, ble ikke planen realisert før under Thomas von Westen. Kanskje hadde dette særlig sammenheng med at det her alt lenge hadde vært offentlige gammer inne i fjorden som også ble brukt til gudstjenester forrettet av Vadsø-presten. Det var de såkalte kongsgammene. Kongsgammene ble stadig vedlikeholdt.
