Botve Larsens familie må ha slått seg ned her i Havsjømoen i ca.1690.
Dattera Kari er døpt i Havsjømoen i 1693.

5250 «b»Christen Johannesen«/b»

by Diane Jolley Bailey
(Great-great Granddaughter)
I have been very interested in the life of Christen Johannesen. To satisfy my curiosity of the "stout-hearted Norwegian," I have tried to find out as much as possible about him by asking his granddaughters for their memories of him and by looking up information about him in the genealogy library in Salt Lake. I have also used information about his life from a history written about his daughter Caroline B. Paulsen (Eleonore's daughter-in-law).

He was born a blond blue-eyed Scandinavian of medium height and build. He had a very rugged sort of personality and a very loud voice. Grandma Jolley (Christen's granddaughter) tells that you could hear him speaking (yelling) a country block away. The intensity of the man wasn't admired by all, but a look at his life tells us that no other personality could have withstood his trials.
He was born in Skiptvedt, Norway on January 20, 1826. He was the son of Johannes Knudsen and Joanne Amundsen. He had one older sister (by four years) named Johanne Marie.

living in Norway, I visited the little town of Skiptvedt. Traveling south from Oslo puts you in the country on narrow dirt roads. The countryside is spotted with small farms. The pretty little farmhouses are painted red with white trim. When I visited Skiptveddt in 1969, time didn't permit me to read the names in the graveyard that surrounded the little old church of the community. But I am sure that I could have found Christen's ancestors buried there.

I can only guess about the childhood of this lad as he grew up on the beautiful short summers and long, cold, snowbound winters in Norway. Surely, he must have learned the value of hard work. The livelihood of those in Skiptvedt depends on the trees of the forests and the fish in the ocean.

Christen wanted more than his little community had to offer, because at the age of thirty, we found him in Oslo. He made his living as a saw mil-master a trade most likely learned in the forests of Skiptvedt.
was hard in Norway at that time, for this reason, many waited until they were older to marry. Such was the case of Christen. He married Hanna Johan's daughter on April 27, 1856. She is also known as Johanna Blickfelt. The same day they were married their first daughter was born. Her name was Josephine. A year later, March 26, 1857, a second daughter was born. The baby wasn't well and wasn't expected to live so they sent for an Elder to come and give her a name and a blessing. Since Christen and Hanna didn't have a name selected, Brother Skougaard blessed her and gave her the name of Eleanora. In 1880, Christen was proud to have his first son born. He named the child Willard.
gave birth to another daughter in 1861. She was named Johanne after the baby's mother. During childbirth, or shortly after, Christen's beloved wife died. Unknown to Christen, is the fact that he would become well acquainted with death as it would visit his family many times in the future. When Willard was just the tender age of four, he died.
He was then alone to raise his two young daughters. Shortly after, he married my great-great grandmother, Nicoline Hansen, who became the mother to the two little girls and she also bore him eight more children: Amelia (May 22, 1863), Emma Torine (December 22, 1865) (Emma was my great-grandmother), Albert Johan (April 18, 1868), Christiania (December 9, 1870), Christen Nicolai (June 14, 1873), Karl (August 19,1876), Valborg (February 2, 18879), and Otto (May 1880).
He worked very hard to support his large family. The oldest children started to work at a nearby cotton factory to help support the family. The family was very poor. The girls were also taught at a very early age to crochet, knit, and sew to help bring perhaps extra income.
tells us that the family was so poor that their main diet was black coffee and dark bread. They occasionally made soup and only had potatoes when they could afford them. They rolled unleavened dough in thin sheets and cooked it on top of the stove.
1880 great sorrow came into Christen's life again. Within nine months his wife and four of his children died of consumption (Tuberculosis). Poor food, crowded living conditions, and hard work must have been the cause. Amelia, and 18 year old daughter, and the three youngest children, Karl, Valborg, and Otto died. One can imagine the grief Christen experienced.

The same time that Amelia was dying, Eleonora was leaving on a ship for America. Eleonora stopped to see Amelia on the way but didn't tell her that she was going to America. The doctor told Eleonora because of consumption in both lungs, that she would never live to cross the Atlantic. However, Eleonora did make it to America. Christen felt another loss as his daughter had traveled so far from home.
Christen's wife had left Christen with some hope. She had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before she had died and perhaps because of her death, Christen was able to accept the gospel.

He was baptized in February of 1883. It was winter and a hole was cut in the ice to facilitate the baptism. Eleonora tells us that when she was baptized, there were such strong feelings against the Mormons in Oslo that people were baptized at night. Conditions weren't much better when Christen joined the Church. One would have had to have courage.

Christen married again and together with his new wife, Marthea Poulsen, they prepared to immigrate to America. Again we see his courage and determination to seek a better life. At the age of 58 he sets out to make a new life for himself. He left with 119 other Scandinavians from Liverpool, England on October 24, 1885 on the ship "Nevada." The agent was Daniel H. Wells. The boat arrived in New York on November 5, 1885 (One month later). This ship of Mormon passengers were complimented for their organization and cooperation but still conditions were not the best. Christen's son Albert, also immigrated to the States, as did Josephine, Emma, Christiania, and Christen Nicolai.. By the time Albert arrived in Utah, he was infested with ice from the voyage across the ocean.
arriving in Utah, Christen and his wife settled in Ephraim, Sanpete County. Marthea was still young being only 32 and she bore him his last son, Jacob, on January 25, 1886. Sometime between the year of 1886 and 1889 Christen's third wife, Marthea died. It must have been consoling for him to take his daughters Eleonora and Emma to the Manti Temple and have them be proxy for their mothers to be sealed to him for all eternity.
Christen lost three wives, he was privileged to have companionship well into his old age. When he was 75 he was listed on the census with another wife named Sophie (from Sweden). She was 56. He lived thirteen more years and died at the age of 88. He had had a bad fall. He was a High Priest in the Ephraim Ward at the time of his death.
Jolley, his granddaughter, remembers once when he was ill. Her mother Emma had given Christen 25 cents to buy some medicine, he instead saved the 25 cents and later used it to buy a flower for Emma when she died. He watched his sweet daughter, Emma, die during childbirth and witnessed as they buried her with her newborn child, who had died shortly after birth, in her arms.
has many descendants still living and we are very thankful for his life. He was the first man on Grandma Jolley's mother's side to accept the gospel and hold the priesthood. I am sure that he had many joyous moments during his lifetime but also learned that even though one may be determined and willing to work hard-life is not easy.
