    mel. Denne eldste Loug finnes bl.a. i to diplomer fra 1623 og 1645. Diplomene
    er oppbevart av familien.
    Jørgen Lou (Loug) var kjøpmann i Skien. Hans navn nevnes i tollregnskapene
    som importør av forskjellige varer. Det har ikke vært mulig å få vite hans
    farsnavn da han bare ble nevnt med familie navnet Lou. Samtlige
    lensregnskaper for Bratsberg er gjennomgått for å se om han muligens ble
    nevnt i byregnskapene under sitt fulle navn, eller om hans segl fantes. Resultatet
    har vært negativt. Også de eldste dokumenter for Bratsberg amt i statsarkivet
    er systematisk gått i gjennom, uten resultat. Senere blir han nevnt i en
    straffesak. Det forlangtes nemlig at han skulle skaffe innkvartering. Han
    nektet å ta imot tvungne gjester og overøste myndighetene med skjellsord.

    Likevel må han vært en snill mann, for han hjalp sin hustrus moster gjentagne
    ganger med pengelån. (Karine Nilsdtr, enke etter Peder Jenssøn, borgermester

    Det er mulig at Jørgen Lou var sønn av Lagmann i Skien (senere Tønsberg) Hans
    Lou (Law, Loe) som ofte blir nevnt. Han var sønn av Jacob Loe på Eiker, den
    store og mektige trelasthandler.
    Jørgens sønn Jørgen kalte seg Loe i flg. en skje donert til Drammens
    museum.


    I nyere tid har et par slektsforskere kommet frem til at Jørgen eller
    hans kone må være av hollandsk avstamming da en av sønnene ble kalt Jan,
    et nederlandsk navn. Hvorvidt det er Jørgens mor eller far som kommer derfra
    er usikkert og lar seg i dag ikke bestemme så lenge man ikke kjenner noe
    til hans bakgrunn. Kan Jørgens far ha hett Jahn? Et annet navn er Jørgen
    da eldste sønn heter Jørgen.

    Ut fra vanlige navnetradisjoner synes det også merkelig at Elses far
    Laurits ikke ble oppkalt. Navnet er ikke brukt i det hele tatt i de første
    generasjoner etter Jørgen. Kan fornavnet være feil? Ut fra
    oppkallingstradisjoner skulle vedkommende enten ha hett Jan, Hans eller
    Jørgen.
    Hof bygdebok skriver: "Jørgen Low og Else Lauritsdtr løste inn fra Gert
    Janssøn (d. før 1623) og Femia Sørensdtr 18 1/2 lpd mel i "Herrestad i Hof".
    Den 25. april 1621 lånte Jørgen Low 100 "gode rdl in specie" til Karine
    Nilsdatter, og senere til forskjellige tider ytterligere 100 rdl "til hennes
    nødtørft, sagleie mv.". For disse 200 rdl pantsatte Karine i 1623 til
    Jørgen Low oghans kone 18 1/3 lpd i Herstad, "som er hennes fri og frelse
    odel", tilk fullt brukelig pant. Karines datter Karen Nilsdatter (?) hadde
    av de 18 1/3 lpd arvet 3 lpd.Raff Richertssøn, som kalles Karines svoger,
    dvs. svigersøn, samtykket i at Karens 3 lpd ble pantsatt til Jørgen Low
    sammen med morens part i Herstad. Disse 18 1/3 lpd skjøtet barna til Karen
    og Raff Rickertssøn i 1657 til Jørgen Lougs eldste sønn Jørgen Jørgensen
    Loug for 70 rdl."
