Marie was born in Norway, but her family moved to Belgium in 1884, then immigrated to the United States in 1896, sometime after Marie's confirmation in Belgium in April of that year. In 1903, she crossed the Atlantic, sailing aboard the S.S. Zeeland, from Antwerp, Belgium, on July 25, 1903, bound for New York. She is registered as "Miss Marie Johanne Doxrud", age 20, and is an American citizen. In the 1910 census for New York City, borough of Manhattan, she was shown to be living with Adela H. Loomis, head of the household. Marie's relation to her is listed as "friend"; she is 28 years old, single, Norwegian by birth, immigrated to America in 1896, and is a music teacher by occupation. A 1906 ship's manifest lists her as "Marian". She travelled again in 1911, aboard the S.S. Lapland, sailing from Antwerp on 23, 1911, and arriving in New York on October 2.
The manifest of the S.S. Kronprinz Wilhelm, departing from Bremen, Germany, on September 16, 1913, and arriving in New York on September 23, records "Austria" as her nationality, the country of which she was citizen or subject. It also shows her last permanet residence as Berlin, Germany, where her husband, Joseph, resided at Hotel Esplanade. Under "whether ever before in the United States; and if so, when and where?", Marie answered "every year since 1902/1912". The year "1902" is repeated here, and it is ambiguous just what this entry implies, but it is clear that she travelled to and from the United States every year. The manifest also records the name "aunt Mrs. A. K. (H?) Lewis, New York New York 175th 58th (illegible)" as the person Marie was coming to see. She is recorded as being 5 ft., 7 in. tall, with fair complexion, blue hair (?!), blue eyes, and no identifying marks. Her place of birth was listed as Christiania, Norway. Much of the information recorded in this manifest is questionable. Travelling with Marie was her maid, Marie Wohlmann, age 30, native of Germany. Joseph Stransky was listed as her employer, and it was he who paid for her transportation.
The United States Census for Manhattan, New York, enumerated on January 10, 1920, shows Marie and her husband Josef Stransky. He is 47 years old and working as a musician, and she is 37 years old. Her occupation is listed as "Servant Home". Living in their household are two servant girls from Ireland.
The 1930 census for Manhattan shows him to be 57 years old and employed as an art dealer, while she 49 years old and is a housewife. Her age given in this census conflicts with the 1920 census. Their ages at the time of their marriage were 39 and 31 respectively. No children are listed in any census records. Marie gave the year 1887 as the year of her immigration to the United States, but in 1887 she was only five years old and would have had to immigrate with her parents. Her mother stated in the 1910 census that she and her family immigrated to the United States from Belgium in 1897, which seems more likely, especially since Maria's youngest brother, George, was born in Belgium in 1888, according to information given in the 1900 census. The 1930 census shows a lodger, Charlotte Powell, living with Marie and Josef.
Marie Doxrud Stransky died on February 2, 1954. The documented provenance of a portrait by Delapierre, 1785, shows that the painting passed from Josef Stransky to his wife upon his death on March 6, 1936. It was later sold at auction on October 16, 1954, after Marie's death.
Marie's obituary appeared in the New York Times on February 2, 1954:
"MRS. JOSEF STRANSKY, CONDUCTOR'S WIDOW -- Special to The New York Times.
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 2--Mrs. Marie Johanna Stransky, widow of Josef Stransky, conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1911 to 1923, died today after a long illness at the home of her sister, Miss Olivia C. Doxrud, in Germantown.
Mrs. Stransky, the daughter of Capt. Hans D. Doxrud, a vice president of the Norwegian-American Line, and Mrs. Doxrud, was born in Bergen, Norway. She received her education in Belgium, Switzerland and the United States.
Before her marriage in 1912, Mrs. Stransky was soprano soloist at St. Bartholomew's Protestant Episcopal Church in New York when Leopold Stokowski was organist there. She met her future husband while appearing with the Philharmonic as soprano soloist in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which Mr. Stransky conducted. He died in 1936.
Mrs. Stransky had made her home at the St. Regis Hotel in New York.
She is survived by another sister, Mrs. Henrietta Waerner, and a brother, George H. Doxrud."
